“…. Go and search diligently for the child….” Matthew 2:8
Herod’s instruction to the Magi “go and search diligently for the child” is said with deadly intentions in his heart. God willing, our search is ever ongoing and drawn by faith and hope in the promise of eternity with Our Lord Jesus Christ. To search diligently calls us to seek deeper truths in our spiritual and everyday lives. It implies that the discovery of truth may sometimes require effort and perseverance, always with the belief that the outcome will lead us closer to the Lord Jesus.
On this Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, strangers, foreigners, and total outsiders came to give royal homage to this tiny child, the Baby Jesus. This gospel verse allows us to reflect on how God divinely guided the wise men without their knowing where the star would lead them until it brought them to Bethlehem – and to Jesus. May the Magi’s example of trust remind us that the Lord is guiding us even without us knowing where our earthly journey will take us. Let us pray, “Lord Jesus, may I trust in you, even when my path seems uncertain.” Amen.
Thank You to Deacon Bill Dwyer for writing and sharing this reflection.
