So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.
(Mt 24:44)
Jackson Browne wrote a song called “For A Dancer” in tribute to a friend of his who had passed away. The lyrics of the opening verse are:
Keep a fire burning in your eye
Pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down
Jackson’s words ring like the message we’re hearing in our readings on this first Sunday of Advent. From Isaiah, the prophet warns that in days to come, we need to be prepared to walk in the light of the Lord. From Romans, Saint Paul tells us that now is the time to wake from sleep and put on the armor of light. And from Matthew’s gospel, Jesus tells us to stay awake, with candles burning, and await the Son of Man.
The song’s focus then moves from a personal preparedness to a desire for a better world for all:
Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
This Advent, let’s keep a fire burning to prepare ourselves, and others, for the return of our Lord.
Thank You to Deacon Luc Lambert for writing and sharing this reflection.
