The Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name." (Lk 21:12)
This Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time brings to our readings some ominous language. Notice in the first reading from the prophet Malachi: “Lo, the day is coming…” and from our gospel reading from Saint Luke: “The days will come….” Both are speaking of the end of times and it seems that it’s not going to be good for the home team, folks! When you hear foreboding words such as these, the first question is always, “When will this take place?” Famously, Jesus doesn’t answer the first question, but He goes into great detail about the signs that must first take place before the temple is destroyed and before the end of times, indicating that they are two separate events.
And yet, amid all the gloom and doom, there is good news from both readings. Those hardy souls who can withstand the persecutions and who persevere in following the Lord will be saved. Good news indeed!
Thank You to Deacon Luc Lambert for writing and sharing this reflection.
