The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
“Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."……But he was speaking about the temple of his Body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.” John 2:19, 21-22
Jesus is speaking of His impending death and Resurrection, and the disciples came to believe what Jesus had spoken when he was raised from the dead. What of our belief….by our baptism, you and I enter into a new life with Christ. When we receive Eucharist, the Real Presence of Jesus comes to dwell physically within us. As we leave “to go in the peace of Christ” we are reminded that Jesus is not just confined to a physical structure, He is within us to be Christlike to all we encounter. And, just as Jesus’ body is a temple, we, too, are called to honor our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, living in a way that reflects His love and holiness.
On this Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, celebrated by our universal church, let us pray for our own Blessed Trinity Parish, our Archdiocese of Boston. all dioceses, churches, and sacred places around the world, that they be places where all encounter the Risen Christ. We pray for Pope Leo XIV in a particular way today, that in the Lateran Basilica, he may encounter Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen
Thank You to Deacon Bill Dwyer for writing and sharing this reflection.
