27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
How long, O Lord? I cry for help but you do not listen! (Habakkuk 1:2)
I think we’ve all felt the exasperation expressed in the above verse from our reading from the Prophet Habakuk. As we look around us, it can seem as if all our efforts to remain in Him are in vain. But, in our reading from his second letter to Timothy, Saint Paul teaches us that we have all the tools we need to remain faithful disciples of Jesus.
Jesus fine-tunes this instruction after the apostles ask Him to increase their faith. He tells them that mustard seed-sized faith is all they need to move large trees or even mountains, because God does the heavy lifting for us. Living our lives in His service is also very much our obligation, as Jesus goes on to enlighten us through the parable of the unprofitable servant. Whatever we do on God’s behalf with our lives and our gifts is simply, and joyfully, our God-given mission. Let’s just embrace it!
